Microorganism has enormous potential for the application in agriculture and industry. Many microbial germplasm has been commercialized and many are under the process of commercialization. As per the Indian Patent Act, microorganism as a whole from its natural habitat is not a patentable item. Despite of its non-patentability they can be commercially exploited through licensing.
To check the biopiracy and unforeseen grant of patent, Bureau, in the light of ICAR guidelines, has developed the system of registration and documentation of elite microbial germplasm. It will also help in facilitating the following of elite germplasm in scientific community for further research and refinement of technology. The bureau has developed the detailed guideline on registration process and printed it in a booklet form. The same has been circulated in different research organization for wide publicity.
