Microbial Conservation

Various methods are used for short and long term conservation and preservation of different types of AIMs including filamentous fungi, bacteria, actinomycetes and yeasts at NAIMCC. These include sub-culturing and maintenance on solid media, mineral oil storage, freeze-drying/lyophilization, storage in glycerol at – 80 *C.   Each culture is preserved by at least two methods according to the type of microorganism. Fungi are preserved under mineral oil storage, or freeze-drying/ lyophilization or slants. Bacteria, actinomycetes and yeasts are preserved under freeze-drying/ lyophilization or slants or in glycerol at – 80 *C. Now the cyanobacterial cultures have also been included in NAIMCC as part of culture collection and method for their long term preservation is being standardized.
